Holiday Concert Delights

By MARILYN BROWN The Tampa Tribune

Their faces said it all: happiness.

From the first soft strains from The Florida Orchestra to the clear solo of Mary Kay Wilson's "O Holy Night," and a finale of carols sung from every corner of the hall, the faces captured the day.

Calvin Young, enraptured, sat with his classmates from Cahoon Elementary magnet school near the front of the hall. In his school T-shirt, jeans and sneakers, the 9-year-old smiled broadly and nodded when asked his favorite.

"Jingle Bells," he said.

Up at the very top of the third balcony in the last row by the wall sat 31 fourth- and fifth-graders from Tampa's Bing Elementary. Eyes wide, they clapped and sang along to "Sleigh Ride" as the orchestra created the sounds of horses, bells and a whip. Closest to the stage, where ballerinas twirled and professional wrestler Randy "Macho Man" Savage literally growled his annual "A Visit from St. Nicholas" ode, perched fourth- and fifth-graders from Tampa's Edison Elementary.

The 19th annual Children's Holiday Concert brought together students from dozens of schools with the highest rate of students from poor families.

The event is sponsored by the principal owner of the New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner, and his family's foundation.

TAMPA YANKEES VISIT SCHOOLS
IN THE TAMPA BAY AREA

On Thursday, April 5th, The Tampa Yankees staff and mascot,
Blue visited Cleveland Elementary. Blue met over 60, fifth-grade students and teachers. Students had the opportunity to win prizes by answering Yankees trivia. But not all students were left empty handed; each child received a Yankees gift along with a coloring sheet, word search and their own pack of baseball cards.

Blue and the Tampa Yankees staff will visit ten more schools in the Tampa Bay area. All the schools that we visit with this year will all attend one of three games catered especially for kids. At the game, each child will receive a lunch consisting of a hot dog, chips and a drink. The games will be held April 18th, May 8th and 13th and the game times have been changed to day games with these kids in mind. It was a success last year, and we have more children coming this year, to make the event even bigger and better!

On May 11th the Tampa Yankees staff and mascot brought joy and excitement to students at both Anderson Elementary and Lavoy Exceptional Center.

Armed with prizes, staff members tested the students to see how much they knew about the New York Yankees and the Tampa Yankees.

As soon as the Tampa Yankees’ mascot Blue entered the room at Anderson Elementary, it was filled with the smiles and giggles of happy children. Every face was fixed on staff member Matt Gess as he explained the nature of the visit and the trivia game. To the surprise of the T-Yanks staff and the Anderson Elementary faculty the group of approximately 80 students performed well, showing that they knew a great deal about the Yankees.

As the visit came to a close, the Tampa Yankees staff reminded the students at Anderson Elementary that they would be attending a Tampa Yankees game and to cheer as loud as the could for the T- Yanks. The students expressed their enthusiasm and excitement about attending the Tampa Yankees with cheers.

The staff and mascot loaded up and it was off to the next school, Lavoy Exceptional Center.

At Lavoy, the Tampa Yankees staff had the pleasure of meeting nearly 70 exceptional students with special needs. The students at Lavoy Exceptional Center were over-excited with the mascot and the baseball equipment that we brought. We gave the students a chance to get an up close and personal experience with real baseball equipment. The students tried on some of the equipment and imitated baseball players.

Blue and the Tampa Yankees staff had the opportunity to visit Westshore Elementary as well on April 13th. “This will be continued throughout the season as we try and enlighten and educated the younger
fan of the game of baseball”, said Vance Smith, General Manager of the Tampa Yankees.

    Legends Field Opens New Club
New for 2006 – The Bright House Networks Dugout Club

Want to get up-close-and-personal with some Yankees? Now's your chance. The brand-new Bright House Networks ~ Dugout Club, an exclusive seating area behind home plate and private club under the stands, will welcomed its first guests during the season opener, March 1 at Legends Field.

Yankees Vice President, Howard Grosswirth says the "104 new seats put fans closer to the batter than the pitcher. But the real impetus for building the Dugout Club was to bring more fans into the fold." "With the demand for Yankees baseball, we've always wanted to allow more people to watch the games. We've added two additional rows to the stadium, and we broke in under the stadium to build the club. We're really excited about this."

Besides a great view of the game, guests will enjoy a buffet and drinks inside the club — outfitted with a flat-screen television to catch every play — and a private wait staff will take care of die-hard fans who prefer to remain in their seats, close to the action. VIP parking passes are also included in the package.

The Bright House Networks Dugout Club is available during Tampa Yankees season as well as the off season for private events.

Next season will see an even bigger crowd: The Yankees are building a five-tier deck in right field, with seating for 500. Legendsfieldtampa.com. — Wendy Malloy,
